Things worth knowing
The questions people ask us after the repair are often more interesting than the ones before. We have written up the useful ones here, covering care, safety and the choices that come with a new door.

Repair & Maintenance
Is the inspection a repair visit?
It is a look and a record first. Small maintenance items such as lubrication, cleaning and aligning the photo eyes and tightening fasteners can be done on the spot if you wish. Anything involving spring tension, cables, drums, worn rollers or damaged sections is written up with a clear explanation and quoted as its own job, so you decide with the full picture in front of you. The sensor light is blinking. What does that mean?
On most openers a steady light on each photo-eye means the pair are aligned and seeing each other, and a blinking light means the beam is interrupted or the sensors are out of line. Common causes are a bracket nudged by a bin or a tire, dust or salt film on a lens, low sun at a certain hour, or a chafed wire. During a tune-up the lenses are cleaned, the brackets straightened, the pair realigned and the wiring checked back to the opener. Garage Door Tune-Up
How is a reset different from a track repair?
In a reset the rail is sound and the work is putting rollers, cables and sections back where that rail expects them, with minor alignment corrections. In a track repair the rail itself is the problem and must be straightened, re-hung or partly replaced first. One visit can include both, and the technician tells you which you need after looking at the door rather than guessing from the description. Off-Track Garage Door Reset
What happens if my door's design has been discontinued?
It happens with older doors, since embossing patterns, joint profiles and colours change over the years. The technician looks for the nearest current section from the same manufacturer and describes how it would differ in look and fit. Sometimes the difference is minor and acceptable; sometimes the joint no longer mates. In that case the options are a section from a compatible series, or replacing the door as a whole, and both are explained before anything is ordered. Garage Door Panel Replacement

Springs & Hardware
What lubricant is right for a garage door?
A lubricant made for garage doors, applied lightly to hinge knuckles, roller stems and the springs, following the door maker's own recommendation, since the right product and whether bearings are included varies by manufacturer. General-purpose penetrating oils are thin and wash away, and heavy grease attracts grit. Nothing goes on the track raceway or on a nylon or plastic wheel. The opener's chain or screw rail may take a lithium grease according to its manual, and the manual for your door names what its maker prefers. Garage Door Roller Replacement
Are hinges on a wood door different?
The hinges themselves are the same numbered galvanized parts, but the fastening changes. Wood stiles take lag screws or carriage bolts with nuts and washers rather than self-drilling metal screws, and the timber's condition matters as much as the hinge. Softened or split wood around the holes is filled, reinforced or bridged with a backer plate before the hinge goes back on, so the new hardware bites into something solid. What if the car hit the door as well as the track?
Then the assessment covers both. A bumper that creases the track usually dents or bows the bottom section, and can bend the bottom bracket, the roller stem and a hinge. The technician follows the impact through those parts, straightens or replaces the track, and explains separately what the section and its hardware need, whether that is a strut, a bracket, or a replacement panel. The door is only put back to work once the whole path is sound. Garage Door Track Repair or Replacement
What makes a cable fray?
Fraying is individual wires breaking, and it comes from two things: bending fatigue where the cable wraps the drum or pulley, and rubbing where it touches something it should not, such as a bent track edge, a rough drum groove, a seized pulley or a bracket sitting crooked after a bump. Corrosion speeds both. The technician looks for the rough edge so the new cable does not meet it. Garage Door Cable Replacement

Openers & Access
What should I check before calling?
Look for the simple things: is the opener plugged in and its light working, has the wall control's lock indicator started blinking, does another remote work, is anything sitting in the path of the sensors, and are the little sensor lights steady. Note what the motor does when you press a button. Do not try to lift a door that is stuck if a spring looks broken. Whatever you find, tell the technician; it shortens the diagnosis. Should I use the slide lock on the door with a chain drive?
No. The manual slide lock on the door is disabled or removed once an operator is connected, and the technician checks that during the repair. A motor pulling against a locked door strains the chain, strips the drive gear and can bend the top section of the door. If you want the door secured against remotes, the lock button on the wall control switches them off, and a track lock designed to work with an operator does the rest. Chain-Drive Opener Repair
Does the trolley need replacing when the belt does?
Not usually. The trolley is checked while the belt is off: its halves should part with the release cord and lock again, the housing should be free of cracks and it should ride the rail without play. A trolley that passes those checks stays and simply receives the new belt and a fresh clip. One that sticks or rattles is replaced in the same visit. Belt-Drive Opener Repair
What is a wall-mount opener and who is it for?
It is the operator that lives on the wall rather than the ceiling. Fixed where the torsion shaft ends, it rotates the shaft to raise and lower the door, and nothing hangs overhead. It suits cathedral and low ceilings, garages with lofts or lifts, and anyone who wants a very quiet door. Because there is no trolley holding the door shut, it comes with a powered deadbolt on the track and a monitor that stops the door if a lift cable slackens. Garage Door Opener Replacement

Installation & Upgrades
What tests are completed before handover?
The door is moved manually through its range, paused at selected positions for balance, and observed for smooth roller, cable and section travel. After a compatible opener is connected, full cycles, limits, controls, photo eyes, reversal response and emergency release are checked using the applicable instructions. Results are reviewed with the customer. Sectional Garage Door Replacement
Can the installation improve a draughty opening?
A properly fitted insulated door with fresh perimeter and bottom seals addresses common air paths through and around the opening. The installer checks section joints, jamb contact, header contact and the slab line. Comfort also depends on walls, ceiling, service doors and ventilation, so the door is treated as one important boundary in the garage rather than the only factor. What makes one quote different from another?
Quotes vary with opening size, required pressure, section construction, insulation, glazing, reinforcement, track and hardware configuration, jamb condition, anchoring material, counterbalance design, operator compatibility, access, documentation, and coordinated structural work. A useful proposal identifies these assumptions clearly so the selected assembly and installation scope can be compared on matching project criteria. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement
Will my current garage door opener stay in place?
That depends on its supported door size and weight, rail arrangement, condition, controls and safety features. The assessment compares its product information with the selected door and checks whether the attachment can be reinforced correctly. When it remains, travel and force are reset for the new balanced assembly. Any opener change is identified separately in the planned scope. Carriage-House Garage Door Installation
